Joel paused before going back to Christian, wondering if he was doing the right thing. His heart was torn. He wanted to stay the night with Susie but figured that would hurt Christian more. When he pushed open the bedroom door, he saw Christian lying curled up with his back to him. Joel went into the bathroom, cleaned up and then climbed into bed. He snuggled behind Christian, wrapping his arm around his chest and pulling himself tight to Christian’s back.

“Did you fuck her?” Christian asked.

Joel froze.

“Yeah, I can smell you did.”

“I love you,” Joel said.

Christian recoiled as though Joel had stabbed him, shooting to the edge of the bed before he turned to face him. “Now you say that? Now that you’ve fucked her, you tell me you love me? I wait and I wait and now you tell me? You bastard.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Couldn’t you have waited to say that to me? It’s your fucking birthday. I thought… Couldn’t you have waited?”

The truth was that no, Joel didn’t think he could have waited but he knew he’d hurt Christian in a way he hadn’t imagined.

“Did you use a condom?” Christian asked quietly.

Fuck. “No.”

Christian groaned. “You fucking prick.” He shot to his feet and began to pace.

“It’s okay. She’s on the Pill,” Joel said.

“Fucking hell, Joel. It isn’t fucking okay, you stupid wanker.”

Joel was bewildered. He needed to make this right but he didn’t know what to say.

“She’s on the Pill to sort out her periods,” he blurted. “She’d never slept with anyone before.”

Oh Christ, well that would have been better kept quiet.

“She’s not sleeping with anyone now, is she?” Christian snapped. “Fuck off back to her.”

Joel sat up. “I want to be with you.”

“I know you’re fucking lying. You can’t look me in the eye.”

Joel’s mouth tightened. How come he was the villain? “I’m not lying, Christian. I want to be with you.”

“Well, right this moment I don’t want to be with you.”

“Go in there and fuck her yourself, then,” Joel retorted. “That’s what we were going to do. I just sped things up.”

Christian paused in his stomping. “Don’t you try and tell me you did that for me.”
